Hokkaido is the northernmost of Japan's four main islands and is the largest prefecture in the country with five million inhabitants. The capital of Hokkaido is Sapporo, where roughly two-fifths of the population lives.
Hokkaido boasts a geographically vast region with mountains, plains and lakes speckled throughout. The prefecture is renowned for its beautiful and rugged natural scenery, including the Daisetsuzan mountain range and the Shiretoko Peninsula, both of which are designated as national parks. The parks are home to diverse wildlife, including the famous red-crowned cranes, Ezo deer, and brown bears. The island's varied ecosystems and national parks provide opportunities for wildlife enthusiasts and ecotourism. As Hokkaido is in the north most of Japan, it has a colder climate compared to the rest of the nation. Winters are long and cold, with thick, heavy snowfall, making it a popular destination for winter sports enthusiasts. The summers are cooler and more comfortable, which is a relief for those seeking respite from the sweltering heat in other parts of Japan.
Hokkaido is often referred to as the "breadbasket" of Japan because of its significant agricultural production, producing over 12 percent of the nation’s yearly produce. While the entire region is well known for its dairy farming, producing high-quality dairy products, such as milk, cheese, and butter, local regions have their own specialty crops and items that define them. For example, Yubari city is famous worldwide for their Yubari cantaloupes, famed for its orange, tender flesh and exquisite taste.
Hokkaido also boasts a rich, diverse culture, as the indigenous Ainu people have a significant cultural presence. Their heritage and unique traditions are celebrated and preserved through museums, festival, and cultural centers. Golden Kamuy, a manga series by Satoru Noda, follows the story of the protagonist and an Ainu girl looking for the lost fortune of the Ainu peoples. The manga is not only a great read, but it also has a specific focus on the Ainu culture, language and beliefs, allowing for readers to learn more about the Ainu through a fantastic (although often violent) adventure.
In terms of tourism, Hokkaido is a popular destination for tourists throughout the year. Famed for its ski resorts, visitors from all around the world come to enjoy winter activities like skiing and snowboarding. In the summer, activities such as hiking, biking, and exploring the island's pristine nature become the main focus.
Because my family comes from Hokkaido, I have a specific place in my heart for the prefecture. I would love it if more people would visit to know about this wonderful, wonderful place! I’d suggest going in the winter to experience the full dynamism of the season, and to enjoy the sea urchins, winter crab and juicy salmon.
